so predators will not be able to locate her babies by the smell of their solid wastes ..

dad not allowed in nest ..
mom transfers her scent to the babies to protect them from male harvest mice
female harvest mouse urine has chemical in it that reduces male aggression

nursery nest always well built .. very safe .. camouflaged well insulated
    high up ..
she has more than 1 nest .. usually 3 .. just in case needs them

baby old world harvest mice are so full of energy .. they play inside nest so much
that they even poke heads out of nest to outside
they wear out nest fast !

15 days .. tail is full length
    young are independent
    mom leaves nest
young are ready to be on own
    can take care of themselves

babies stay near nest for a few days
    and
    then go on own

    sandy greyish brown
then .. become more reddish brown after molt shed

    full sized adults
    4 - 5 weeks
    and reproductively mature

babies are very vulnerable when first leave nest
because they do not know how to quickly respond to danger signals

ALL HARVEST MOUSE SPECIES ARE CHALLENGED BY THE LOSS OF HABITAT
    FROM ..
    HUMAN ACTIVITIES
    HUMAN DEVELOPMENT SPRAWL
    CROP FARMING
    CATTLE GAZING
    URBANIZATION

the habitat of all of the world's harvest mice species is endangered

    PROBLEMS

many humans are not ready to be concerned about endangered species of rodents .. mice
because many humans are afraid of mice

THERE IS A HUGE LACK OF EDUCATION AND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE WORLD'S
    SPECIES OF HARVEST MOUSE

THE HABITAT WHERE THE OLD WORLD HARVEST MOUSE LIVES HAS ALWAYS BEEN TALL GRASS
ALL FARM FIELDS WERE ONCE MEADOWS OR FORESTS ..
HARVEST MICE ADAPTED TO LIVING AT THE EDGE OF HUMAN CREATED FARM FIELDS

AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES OF LONG AGO LEFT TALL GRASSES AT EDGES OF FARM CROP FIELDS

NOW HUMANS USE MECHANICAL DEVICES TO FARM WITH ..
THESE METHODS ARE TAKING AWAY THE TALL GRASSES FROM THE EDGES OF THE FIELDS

THE HABITATS ARE BEING DESTROYED AND THAT MEANS LESS AND LESS AND LESS

    LANGUAGE - LITERATURE

    TO A MOUSE
to a mouse on turning her up in her nest with the plough

    wee, skeeket, cowran, tim'rous beastie,
    o, what a panic's in thy breastie !
Thou heed na start awa sae hasty,
    wi' bickering brattle !
I wad be laith to rin an' chase thee,
    wi' murd'ring pattle !

    I'm truly sorry Man's dominion
    has broken Nature's social union,
    An' justifies that ill opinion,
    which makes thee startle,
At me, thy poor, earth-born companion,
    An' fellow mortal !

    I doubt na, whyles, but
    thou may thieve,
what then ? poor beastie ,
    thou maun live !
    A daimen-icker in a thrave
    's a sma'  request:
I'll get a blessin wi' the lave,
    An' never miss 't !

Thy wee-bit housie too, in ruin !
    It's silly wa's the win's are strewin !
    An naething, now,
    to big a new ane,
    O' foggage green !
    An' bleak December's
    wind's ensuin,
    Baith snell an' keen !

    Thou saw the fields
    laid bare an' wast
    An' weary winter coming fast,
    An' cozie here,
    beneath the blast,
    Thou thought to dwell,
    Till crash ! the cruel
    coulter past
    out thro' thy cell.

    That wee bit heap
    o' leaves an' stibble,
    Has cost thee
    monie a weary nibble !
    Now thou's turn'd out,
    for a' thy trouble,
    But house or hald,
To thole the winter's sleety dribble,
    An' cranreuch cauld !

But Mousie, thou art no thy-lane,
In proving foresight may be vain:
the best laid schemes o' Mice an' Men,
    gang aft agley,
    An lea' e us nought
    but grief and pain,
    For promis'd joy !

    Still, thou art blest,
    compar'd wi' me !
    The present only toucheth thee:
But och !  I backward cast my e'e,
    on prospects drear !
An' forward, tho' I canna see,
    I guess an' fear !

    Robert Burns
this wonderful thoughtful poem was written by the incredible Robert Burns in November 1785
about a sweet little old world harvest mouse .. he was plowing his field late in the year and turned up her
winter nest with his plow .. he felt awful for having disturbed her carefully made home with winter
coming and cold weather .. so .. he wrote this beautiful poem to let out his feelings

Robert Burns was born on January 25 1759 and lived until July 21 1796
He is a very well known and beloved poet from SCOTLAND

FROM  ORIGINAL  SCOTTISH version as Robert Burns wrote . . . to the more modern English version

    little, sleek, cowering, timorous beastie,
oh, what a panic is in your breast!
you need not start away so hasty
    with chattering noises!
I would never run and chase you,
    with murdering paddle

    I'm truly sorry man's dominion
    has broken Nature's social union,
    and justifies that ill opinion
    which makes you startle
at me, your poor, earth born companion
    and fellow mortal!

    I doubt not, sometimes, you may steal;
what then? poor beastie, you must live!
an occasional ear of corn in twenty-four
    sheaves is a small request;
I will get a blessing with what is left,
    and never miss it.

Your tiny house, too, in ruin!
It's little walls the winds are strewing !
And nothing now, to build a new one with,
    of grass green !
    And bleak December's winds ensuing,
    both cold and keen!

    You saw the fields
    laid bare and wasted,
    and weary winter coming fast,
    and cozy here,
    beneath the blast,
    You thought to dwell,
    until crash!
    the cruel coulter plough passed
    out through your cell home.

    That small bit heap
    of leaves and stubble,
    has cost you
    many a weary nibble!
    Now you are turned out,
    for all your trouble,
    Without house or holding,
To endure the winter's sleety dribble,
    And cold.

But Mousie, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes of mice and men
    Go often awry,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
    For promised joy!

    Still you are blessed,
    compared with me!
    the present only touches you:
But oh! I backward cast my eye,
    On prospects dreary!
And forward, though I cannot see,
    I guess and fear!
